Ballooning and Outdoor Adventures Bristol

Bristol is one of the best UK cities for outdoor adventure. Ballooning, gorge walking and wild swimming on the doorstep.

Bristol is unusually well-positioned for outdoor adventure. The Avon Gorge drops straight through the city, Leigh Woods is a ten-minute walk from the suspension bridge, and the Mendip Hills and Somerset coast are less than an hour away. The outdoor life is not something you have to travel far to reach.

Hot Air Ballooning

Bristol is probably the most famous ballooning city in Britain, thanks largely to the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in August – the largest balloon festival in Europe, with over 100 balloons launching from Ashton Court every year. But ballooning in Bristol is not just an August event. Bristol Balloon Rides and other local operators run flights year-round, departing from Ashton Court with flight paths that take you over the Avon Gorge, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and the city centre. At dawn or dusk the views are extraordinary.

Avon Gorge and Rock Climbing

The Avon Gorge limestone cliffs are a serious rock climbing venue with routes ranging from beginner to hard sport climbing grades. The Gorge has been climbed since the Victorian era and the route selection is extensive. Bristol Climbing Centre in St Werburghs offers indoor bouldering and lead climbing for wet days or training. The combination of indoor facility and accessible outdoor crag within the city boundary is rare and genuinely excellent.

Leigh Woods and Trail Running

Leigh Woods National Nature Reserve on the Somerset bank of the Gorge has a network of trails through ancient woodland. The running routes range from gentle forest paths to technical root-laden trails that drop steeply toward the river. Early morning trail runs here, with mist over the Gorge and minimal other users, are one of Bristol’s better experiences.

Wild Swimming Near Bristol

The Chew Valley Lake south of Bristol is the accessible wild swimming option – the lake is managed for sailing and fishing but open water swimming is possible at designated areas. The Mendip Hills rivers and pools, particularly around Cheddar, offer proper wild swimming in cold clear water. For those who prefer organised facilities, Henleaze Lake is Bristol’s beloved outdoor lido – membership is competitive but the experience is excellent.
