Freshers Week Bristol – UoB vs UWE
Freshers Week in Bristol is properly fun. Here's what to expect at both universities.
Freshers Week in Bristol lands you in one of the best cities in Britain for a student, which immediately puts you at an advantage. But the two universities have very different Freshers experiences, and knowing what to expect makes the first week significantly less overwhelming.
University of Bristol (UoB) – Freshers
UoB Freshers Week is centred around the Students’ Union on Queens Road. The SU runs a programme of club nights, social events, and day activities across the first ten days. Academically, UoB is a Russell Group university with a reputation and a culture that reflects it – Freshers Week here carries a low-key sense of importance, which can manifest as either excitement or mild anxiety depending on your disposition. The city immediately around UoB – Clifton, Redland – fills with freshers exploring the same handful of pubs, which is part of the experience. The Coronation Tap and the White Bear are traditional first stops.
University of the West of England (UWE) – Freshers
UWE’s main campus is in Frenchay, north of the city, which makes the Freshers experience more campus-focused initially. The SU here is larger and arguably produces better Freshers events in terms of scale. The city is less immediately accessible from Frenchay, but UWE students tend to discover Bristol proper by week two and then make up for lost time. City Centre accommodation UWE students have a better first-week geography. The UWE nights at Motion and Lakota are worth knowing about – these promoters have the bookings that suit a student budget.
Both Universities
Bristol Freshers Week in the wider city sense centres on the club nights at Thekla, Lakota, and Motion that all target both universities simultaneously. Pre-buying tickets for the big events in the first two weeks is essential – they sell out, sometimes before you’ve finished unpacking. Download the Bristol SU apps for both institutions if you have friends across both.
The most important thing about Freshers Week in Bristol: the city exists beyond it. Don’t spend the whole week in the SU bar when Stokes Croft and the harbourside are twenty minutes away.
