Student Pubs Near UWE Bristol: Frenchay and Beyond
Where UWE Bristol students drink. Frenchay campus options and the city centre circuit.
UWE’s main Frenchay campus is on the northern edge of Bristol. The campus itself has a students union with a bar and multiple food outlets, but the wider pub and social scene requires a bus journey into the city. Here is how UWE students navigate it.
The Galleries, Broadmead
The shopping centre in Broadmead has a cluster of chain bars and restaurants adjacent to it on Merchant Street and the surrounding area. For UWE students on the bus route into central Bristol, this is often the first stop on a night out due to proximity to the bus drop-off points. The standard chain pubs here are functional and cheap without being distinctive. Useful as a gathering point for large groups.
The Golden Lion, Stokes Croft
A bus from Frenchay into the city centre puts UWE students on Stokes Croft, Bristol’s most counter-cultural thoroughfare. The Golden Lion on Cheltenham Road at the top of Stokes Croft is a large, cheap pub popular with students and the local arts community in equal measure. Regular live music, a wide outdoor terrace, and prices that match a student budget. Worth the journey and worth exploring the area around it.
The Stumble Inn, Stokes Croft
A few hundred metres down from the Golden Lion, the Stumble Inn is a reliable student pub on Stokes Croft. Pool table, cheap drinks, and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that suits a midweek evening when you do not want to commit to a full night out. The Stokes Croft area as a whole has enough pubs and cafes to sustain a whole evening without needing to move to other parts of the city.
UWE SU Bar, Frenchay Campus
The campus students union bar is the default option for UWE students who do not want to make the bus journey. It runs regular events and the pricing is the best in the immediate area. The SU building at Frenchay is well-equipped with food and social spaces alongside the bar. Worth investing in the SU membership for access to the full events programme.
King Street and Queen Square
Once in the city centre, UWE students who want a step up from the chain pub circuit should head to King Street, which has some of Bristol’s best independent pubs including the Llandoger Trow (one of Bristol’s oldest pubs), the Old Duke jazz pub, and a cluster of independents that make it one of the better pub streets in the city.
